Nepal Flood Disaster: Death Toll Surpasses 540 as Nearly 2,000 Remain Missing

Due to the disastrous flash floods caused by glacial outburst on the Nepal-Tibet border, the number of deaths in Nepal has reached more than 570 while close to 2,000 people are reported missing in both Nepal and Tibet. Among those missing are at least 32 Canadians whose numbers are being reconciled with the Nepalese authorities by Global Affairs Canada leading the Canadian federal government to provide emergency aid of $5 million for food, drinking water, and shelters. Rescue operations, extremely hampered by mud and damage to vital infrastructure, are concentrated on pulling out over 100 workers trapped in a tunnel of the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project where 350 have been saved up until now. The operations are conducted amid extreme risks and suspensions as the authorities are on red alert over a barrier lake formed at the high altitudes as well as the dam burst in Tibet that pose the risk of new floods.
